World leaders and officials including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Queen Elizabeth II are offering their condolences in the wake of the tragedy that claimed the lives of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynski and reportedly more than 90 others on Saturday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kaczynski family, the loved ones of those killed in this tragic Plane crash, and the Polish nation," President Obama said, according to the Associated Press.
Kaczynski, his first lady wife, and 95 other individuals, including some of Poland's most distinguished military and civilian leaders, died Saturday when the presidential plane crashed while trying to land in thick fog in Russia, says the AP. There were no survivors.
According to CNN, Clinton said: "Like the country he led, President Kaczynski was one of America's most valued and trusted allies." She added that he was "an unstinting advocate for freedom and human rights not just in Poland, but around the world."
Queen Elizabeth II stated that she received with tragic news "with the deepest sorrow." "I recall President Kaczynski's long and distinguished public service…" she reflected.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "I was shocked and saddened at the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria. President Kaczynski was one of the defining actors in Poland's modern political history." And the AP reports that former President George W.
Bush said, "President Kaczynski was a strong defender of freedom and a friend to the United States. Laura and I have fond memories of our visits with the president and Maria. On this sad day, we send our heartfelt condolences to the people of Poland, and especially to the families of all those lost in this tragic accident."
